Timeline

The University of Bradford was granted its Royal Charter in 1966, but our journey started 134 years earlier in 1832, with the opening of the Bradford Mechanics Institute.

This timeline will take you on that journey through to the present day, showing some of Bradford's key innovations, people, events, and culture.

City Campus has changed and developed a lot in the 50 years since the University was created, with new buildings, facilities and landscaping.

Click on the images below to compare the 1960s campus with today.

The Amphitheatre

Home to the Students' Union's Party on the Amp, and to summer days spent sitting out in the sun, the amphitheatre lies between Student Central, the J.B. Priestley Library, and the Theatre in the Mill.

In the years since the first photograph was taken, the halls of residence on the right have been replaced with MUGA sports pitches, windows have been added to the library, Pemberton Building has been built, and Horton Building has changed shape!

Richmond and re:centre

A once unobscured view of Richmond Building has been replaced with the re:centre in the Bright Building - one of the most sustainable buildings in the world.

Theatre in the Mill

The vision of the original landscapers is realised. Weeping willows have grown from the saplings, and the amphitheatre's green carpet is a magnet for students and staff alike on a hot, sunny day.
