Environmental Science & Sustainability

This is an interdisciplinary research group at the interface of the natural and social sciences. Key research themes in environmental science include Quaternary environmental change, applied ecology, climate change, environmental and biological monitoring, micropalaeontology, geo-archaeology, forensic geosciences and statistical modelling of environmental and biological data. Work on environmental sustainability focuses on how human interaction with the environment can be transformed. Drawing on Geography, Planning, Management and Psychology, we examine the factors supporting and hindering actions for sustainable development by different groups of organisations and individuals. Topics examined include water governance, environmental sustainability in universities, and public engagement processes. Research in Environmental Science and Sustainability links with the Pennine Water Group and the International Centre for Participation Research.
