People

Party on the Amp

We feel strongly that people are central to sustainability and our Ecoversity vision and values.

Through Ecoversity we aim to inspire students, staff, visitors and the community to get involved and help make a difference.

We hope that through our programmes, projects and activities we can raise aspirations and encourage collaboration.

In order to consider a sustainable future we need to look at what we can all do and how we might want to change some of our actions.

Some of our activities to help address sustainability have included cross institutional conferences, action based task groups, events such as Green Travel Week, energy saving initiatives and student projects.

Other ways of getting involved include the following:

Student engagement

Student engagement in Ecoversity is about getting involved, making a difference and creating change.

The home for student engagement in Ecoversity is the activities centre in Student Central. Here we support students to carry out events, projects and activities around sustainable development and the environment.

We have a full calendar of sustainability events and projects happening on campus throughout the year where everybody is welcome to attend.

These Ecoversity campus projects address issues such as sustainability, ethics and the environment through a practical and hands on approach.

We also support Ecoversity interns who take the lead on a sustainable development project of their choice.

Ecoversity and sustainability is central to the role of the Green Ambassadors.

This network of students live in The Green, our sustainable student village, their role is to plan, organise and promote events and competitions.

Green Impact

Green Impact (external link) is an environmental accreditation scheme with an awards element which aims to engage staff and students in sustainable activities across campus.

We are one of 19 universities running the scheme which is managed by the National Union of Students and the Environmental association of Universities and Colleges (external link).

Green Impact is about empowering individuals and departments to reduce their environmental impact by encouraging, rewarding and celebrating practical environmental improvements.

Green Impact provides a great opportunity for staff and students to be part of something and help make a difference. They receive recognition for the actions they are already doing, encourage colleagues to think about sustainability, saves resources – all while having fun!

By adding up the number of environmental actions they carry out departments achieve a Bronze, Silver or Gold Award. Gold is given to the team that puts in place the greatest number of actions.

Last year’s winners were The Estates and Facilities Team. Estates actions include purchasing locally sources free range organic eggs, have milk delivered in traditional glass bottles, have a book swap shop and have put water butt around campus to collect rain water.

We will be launching Green Impact 2011/12 in the very near future.
