We have a strong history and reputation for introducing innovative courses which serve the needs of the professional chemical and forensic sectors in the UK. We have delivered Chemistry since the University received its charter in 1966 and took our first cohort of undergraduate students to the bachelor of science and master of chemistry degrees in Chemistry with Pharmaceutical and Forensic Science in 1993, adding the bachelor, and master in science degree in Forensic and Medical Sciences in September 2002, and the bachelor degree in Forensic Science in 2003. Details of these courses can be found below.

Chemistry with Pharmaceutical and Forensic Science

The degree in Chemistry with Pharmaceutical and Forensic Science has been a popular choice with applicants since its launch in 1993. It was designed to meet a need for high-quality, problem-solving graduates with strong chemical skills who planned to pursue a career in forensic or pharmaceutical sciences. Many graduates have since fulfilled these ambitions.

The course combines the study of pure chemistry with pharmaceutical chemistry and the application of chemistry to forensic and crime scene investigation. Our students acquire substantial chemical and pharmaceutical knowledge together with an appreciation of the scope and limitations of forensic science. They learn how to use this knowledge in the context of forensic investigation, how to interpret forensic evidence and how to present expert testimony.  This combination of skills enables graduates from this course to pursue a wide range of career situations, including those in the world of the forensic \ police scientist.

The Chemistry with Pharmaceutical and Forensic Science course:

  • is chemistry-based and combines the study of chemistry with ...

  • analytical chemistry

  • forensic analysis of suspect substances

  • pharmaceutical chemistry

  • forensic archaeology and anthropology

  • the science of forensic investigation and interpretation, and

  • presentation skills

Forensic and Medical Sciences

This course has been designed for those who wish to develop a broad range of skills in the analytical sciences and who seek to apply these to forensic and medical casework. You will learn about the investigation and diagnosis of disease, health screening, the development of new drug therapies and the scientific methods used to study disease and its treatment and the forensic identification of people. The course builds on the established expertise in Chemical, Biomedical and Forensic Sciences at Bradford and provides:

  • A broad-based understanding of human biological processes and the biological and chemical principles of forensic analysis

  • Specialist training in the application of bio-analytical techniques with a focus on DNA technologies

  • Flexible study patterns: 3 year or 4 year full time, or 4 year sandwich courses

  • The option for a placement in industry (4 year, sandwich course)

  • Integrated undergraduate Masters degree option (Master of Science) with extensive training in advanced research methods (4 year, full-time course)

  • An ideal platform for postgraduate study

  • An extensive range of potential careers including opportunities in medical analysis, clinical sciences and public health laboratories and in forensic investigation

Forensic  Science

Forensic science can be defined as the application of science to questions of law. It has one primary aim - to establish whether or not there is any scientific evidence to link a person (or item) to a scene (of crime). Forensic investigation draws on virtually every branch of science including all of the disciplines of chemistry, biology, physics and  mathematics, and those derived from them such as medicine, computing, engineering and archaeology, to name but a very few. Forensic "science" also encompasses many aspects of the humanities and arts including for example psychology, ethics and law, and a great many vocational subjects such as profiling, photography and reconstruction. A more complete list of topics encountered under the "forensic" banner can be viewed here. You will have the opportunity to learn about the fundamental scientific principles to many of these topics on the Bradford degree in Forensic Science. The Forensic Science course builds on the long-established reputation and expertise in the discipline at Bradford University, and it provides:

  • A multidisciplinary environment in which your studies will encompass a range of core sciences needed to underpin forensic investigation and crime scene examination

  • Opportunities for you to develop a range of practical skills in chemical, human biological and forensic investigation in each year of the course

  • Opportunities for you to specialise in selected areas of forensic investigation in the final year of the course

  • An integrated approach to the development of your skills in scientific investigation and forensic interpretation

  • An emphasis on the development of professional skills that will equip you for life-long learning

  • The option to spend a full year developing skills in a working environment on the 4 year sandwich course

  • An opportunity for you to put you forensic knowledge to work in practical research investigation of importance to the police and forensic professions

  • The necessary skills required for you to pursue careers in a wide range of working environments at the chemistry-biology interface including those involving forensic and crime scene investigation and in research
