Chevening Short Courses

The Chevening scholarships are the UK government's flagship scholarship scheme run under the auspices of the British Council for the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO). It is aimed at future leaders, opinion formers and decision-makers from across the globe and comprises a range of short-term tailor made professional courses and long-term taught academic courses at a variety of higher education institutions in the UK.

The Bradford Centre for International Development (BCID) has been privileged to run several of these highly prestigious short courses, including the Indian Women in Leadership and Management course (IWLM) and several of the new Chevening Fellowship courses. Each one is attended by 12 mid-career managers from a variety of public and private sector backgrounds.

The Indian Women in Leadership and Management course has been run in Bradford since 2003. The course covers a range of subjects designed to enhance the students' awareness of gender issues, leadership skills and management areas. The course runs for 12 weeks including a two week period of attachments and a number of study visits around the UK. Scholars are also required to complete an individual study project on a related topic of their choice. The course runs from the middle of May until August each year.

In association with Institute for Development Policy and Management (IDPM) and the Environmental Impact Assessment Centre (EIA Centre) at the University of Manchester we ran the highly successful Young Indian Environmental Managers Chevening course for five years, alternating its' location between the two cities. Topics covered during the 3 month course included sustainable development, environmental management systems, environmental assessment, trade and the environment and a range of others.
