Taking Part In Research
Patient Donors
ETHICAL TISSUE is the Licensed Research Tissue Bank operating at the University of Bradford. ETHICAL TISSUE, asks people on a regular basis, who are coming into hospital for treatment or attending a clinic for an operation or some form of clinical procedure, whether they would take part in ongoing biomedical research. Although the research will not help these people directly, the aim is to help people in the future by preventing, diagnosing or treating illnesses.
When a patient comes into hospital for treatment or attends a clinic, someone from the biomedical research team will talk to them about the reason for the research and if the patient decides to take part, they will be asked to sign a consent form.
The consent form is a way for a patient to give their permission for a small amount of tissue that was removed during their clinical procedure and not needed by the hospital, to be used in biomedical research. Some patients will also be asked to give additional tissue samples such as an additional biopsy sample or additional body fluid samples. In all cases, what is requested will be explained fully to them and they will be given an information sheet and a copy of their consent form to keep.
