Profile
The introduction of a continuous stream of new and improved products is essential for a company to maintain its competitive advantage. The process of formulating these products, whether they be pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, speciality chemicals or any one of a number of others from industries where product formulation occurs, is a highly specialised task requiring specific domain knowledge and often years of experience. Formulators are therefore a scarce resource and of high intrinsic value to their organisations. Intelligent software tools derived from research into Artificial Intelligence can assist the efficient formulation of products increasing productivity, consistency and quality.

The PROFITS special interest group has been set up in the School of Pharmacy, University of Bradford to facilitate the beneficial adoption of intelligent software to achieve improvement in product formulation.

PROFITS concentrates on those artificial Intelligence technologies that offer major opportunities to formulate products in a radically improved way, i.e. Knowledge Based Systems, Neural Computing and Data Mining. User demand for these technologies is increasing but it is difficult for managers to decide where and how to invest resources.

PROFITS is primarily a means of facilitating the sharing of ideas, experience and issues in these technologies by arranging courses and seminars; preparing bulletins and research reports and undertaking pilot/prototype development.
