| The PROFITS Special Interest Group was set up at the University
of Bradford in February 1999 following an informal meeting in September 1998
between Professors Ray Rowe and
Peter York and a number of managers and
formulation scientists from the UK and European Pharmaceutical/Healthcare
Industries as well as representatives from two Software producers. Subsequent
discussions resulted in the drafting of a
participation agreement
and an initial membership as of February
1999 consisting of four full members, one associate member and two software
producers.
Although it is initially planned to concentrate on the
pharmaceutical/healthcare sectors it is intended to broaden the group to
cover all sectors involved in product formulation.
PROFITS has a permanent office at the University of Bradford
managed by Dr Helen Ngwang

Ray Rowe |
Ray Rowe, Company Research Associate at
AstraZeneca, UK, supervises a team engaged in research and problem solving
in all areas of physical sciences (including colloid science, powder technology
and knowledge engineering) involved in the formulation of medicines. He has
been with AstraZeneca (formerly Zeneca/ICI Pharmaceuticals) since 1973. He
is currently Professor of Industrial Pharmaceutics at the University of Bradford.
With research interests in polymer coating, powder technology including
compaction and granulation, the structural characterisation of complex colloid
systems and, more recently, application of knowledge engineering in the
formulation and analysis, he has published over 300 research papers and reviews
including 8 patents.

Peter York |
Peter York is a Professor of Physical
Pharmaceutics at the School of Pharmacy, University of Bradford. Research
activities involve pharmaceutical material science, coupled to aspects of
chemical engineering and processing, with particular focus on molecular modelling
and solid state structure, particle formation including novel processes using
supercritical fluid technology, and drug delivery design. He has consulted
widely throughout the world, published over 200 scientific articles, holds
numerous patents, and has received research awards.
A recent venture with Bradford University has been the formation
of bpd (Bradford Particle Design) ltd, a company based on research
and patents in particle formation by supercrical fluids, and already a
world-leader in this field. |
