Coating Applications

Various techniques of thin film coating are used in industry. Since 1970, we have carried out a number of studies in the Fluid Mechanics of Coating Flows.

These flow include:

Gravure coating

Multilayer slide coating

Elastohydrodynamic roll coating systems

Deformable roll coating

Air entrainment

Computer simulation

Surface measurement

To aid us in predicting and analysing the results, we make use of computer simulation of coating flows (NEKTON) and image capture/analysis techniques. We have made real advances in studying the effects of air entrainment on the coating quality.

Please see the most recent IGR report on the EPSRC research grant on Dynamic Wetting in Roll Coating Flows.
