Research in the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities addresses questions such as 'How can social cohesion be maintained as families, cultures and communities fracture, recombine and take on new forms? ‘How is society divided by class, ethnicity, gender and sexuality’ 'How do personal and social identities change and respond? 'How will social care take place in this new situation?' 'How should social policy and the law best reflect these changes?' Research is internationally focussed, but also relates to national issues and policies and to the local environment especially in the Bradford District. Research focuses around four main groups:
In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 95% of the Department's submitted research was recognised as 'international in terms of orginality, significance and rigour', with 50% seen as 'internationally excellent' or 'world-leading' (grades 3 and 4). This result places social work and social policy research at Bradford among the leaders in the wider region. The Department is recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council as having full research and organisational capacity to successfully supervise and manage postgraduate research. The department also hosts Marie Curie Fellowships.
