Please note this course is no longer running. As an alternative, you may be interested in our Interdisciplinary Human Studies course which includes many of the similar elements to this course.
Joint Honours programmes enable you to pursue your interest in two main disciplines. The work and assessments you undertake are at the same level as for single honours students but you focus on core modules in each discipline. These modules make up the total credits overall.
You will study the main areas of Western Philosophy, e.g. history of philosophy, ethics, logic and language, philosophy of mind, philosophy of the natural and social sciences. You will learn to analyse central issues which arise from these areas and which are of central concern to human curiosity about the surrounding world.
You will study the main trends of English literature from the 18th Century to the present day. You will learn about 'literature and society', the connection between literature, discourse and language, the contemporary novel, revolution in literature, and audience and reception. You will also do interdisciplinary seminars, in which topical issues are approached from different angles, including literature, philosophy and sociology.
You will graduate with a wide range of knowledge and skills. You will have learnt to analyse complex issues with a flexible mind. Employers find these skills increasingly attractive. Graduate with a background in two disciplines will be equipped to go into a variety of careers: caring professions, journalism, law to name but a few. But there will also be the possibility of further study, perhaps for an MA or PhD.
