Ecoversity and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)

The Green

What is Ecoversity and ESD

Ecoversity is the name given to the University's award winning programme to embed sustainable development into the institutional culture. The development of education for sustainable development in the curriculum of all our students is a key element of  Ecoversity. The academic rationale and policy framework for embedding ESD in the formal curriculum was established in 2007-8 and been refined in subsequent years following review. We adopted the UNESCO framework as a guide for articulating ESD within specific subject and disciplinary fields.

Our approach

Our approach to embedding ESD in the curriculum emphasises:

  • Subject and discipline specificity;
  • Multiple perspectives;
  • An evolutionary approach;
  • Programme level articulation;
  • Alignment with wider institutional pedagogic, teaching and learning and curriculum initiatives.

Our approach to ESD also promotes 2 further learning domains: the Informal curriculum and the Physical curriculum.
