Ecoversity
Energy Week ran 1 – 5 December 2008 and will be an annual event supported by a push to reduce our energy consumption throughout the rest of the year. Specifically, Ecoversity will be encouraging staff and students to 'Switch off' when leaving the workplace or house and prior to each public holiday.
Watch out for further updates on activity.
Last year the University spent over £1M on electricity. Analysis has shown that a lot of our consumption appears to be from non-essential equipment left on overnight or during the day when not in use.
We are running an energy switch off campaign all week and tracking our electricity consumption on a half hourly basis to see if we can reduce our consumption by 10%. To achieve this requires everyone’s help.
A top 10 tips for saving energy in the workplace will be sent out next week and during energy week. Posters and information will be sent out to tell people how we are doing.
A student team will be patrolling the campus during energy week with some stickers depicting a green hand, these will be stuck on any doors where lights or other equipment has been left on and the room is unoccupied. During the course of the week the patrols will be monitoring any reduction in the numbers of rooms being stickered in this way.
If everyone does their bit then we can save a lot, reduce our carbon emissions and cut our bills. There will also be a workshop to explain the new Display Energy Certificates which rate the energy performance of our largest buildings. This workshop will involve a Q and A session with estates to address issues around the heating and user comfort in our buildings.
For more information contact the Ecoversity Office or see our useful links below.
These posters are designed to promote energy week and are available to download or to circulate by email. All are Pdf A4 format.
Use the in-built power management features on your PC to power down when not in use. A PC in idle mode often has an electricity consumption not much lower than when active. So you can change your settings to make sure it goes to sleep or stand-by after a period of time.
HOW TO:
Under Windows Control Panel open “Display”. Select “Screen Saver” tab at the top of the Display Properties window. Select “Power…” button at the bottom of the “Screen Saver” tab.
Suggested Settings: Turn off monitor: after 15 mins; Turn off hard disks: After 15 mins; System standby: Never.
