Combatting Junkmail at the University

Staff sent their snail-junk-mail back to the postroom.

We celebrated World Environment Day on 5 June with an event in the Atrium, 12pm - 2pm:

Staff and students witnessed the mountain of junkmail staff had returned to the University post room just in just ten days, to help raise awareness of World Environment Day – There was also opportunity to find out what you can do to fight the junk mail attack.

The event was open to all, and there was lots going on including a competition for guessing the weight of junk mail mountain.

Prof David Coates was on hand to give staff and students details of the solutions available to them in combating snail-mail overload.

It's free and easy.  We obtained official, and free, ‘return to sender’ stickers and stamps enabling people to get their own back on the junk mail bandits by returning unwanted items.

World Environment Day is a major awareness raising day which is held every year on June 5th to promote taking action to prevent major damage to our environment – for more information see http://www.unep.org/wed/2009/english/.

Competition Result:

Congratulations to Monica Machen (AGES, School of Life Sciences) who correctly guessed the junkmail weight at:
120kg which translates to 19 stone or 264 pounds.

Monica said: “To win it you’ve got to be in it!!  I took part in the Ecoversity  junk mail event recently and luckily for me I guessed the right amount of junk mail.  Unbelievable!! I am pleased to say that the eco friendly shoes I won will be much appreciated as they are really comfy.  So thanks again”

Thanks to all staff and students who took part.

Towards the Future...

The University produces around 150 tonnes a year of paper waste and a significant proportion of this is junk mail that could be avoided. We estimate that the Junk event held on 5 June collected about a quarter of all University junkmail. This means that the University recieves approximately 1.5 Tonnes of junkmail per month.

Following World Environment Day we’ll be trying to ensure that we cut the amount of junk mail entering the University.

hand holding the earth. The post office has advised that all unwanted posts is returned using an official 'Return to Sender' sticker as they are easily identified by postal service staff and can be quicly sorted. Returning post by other methods is less effective.

Regarding work related and domestic junkmail, ensure you are instructing senders to remove you from mailing lists you no longer are interested in. It is also prudent to remove staff who have left the University from related mailing lists.

For domestic households, one can sign up for the mailing preference service, which will prevent some mailings, by visiting the following website and registering your address: http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/

If you would like some 'return to sender' stickers for your unwanted junk mail please contact ecoversity@brad.ac.uk or call 01274 236929. Stickers can also be obtained from the postroom via popping in or calling x4830.
