Green rises to the top: Top 10 in 'Green League' 2009

green league first class award banner.We've moved up 21 places to break into the top ten green Universities, according to the Green League published in the People and Planet Green League, 18 June. Ecoversity and Estates and Facilities say that many projects are ‘coming to fruition’ thanks mainly to the policies and actions of staff and students in thinking about our carbon footprint. Despite a low score for carbon Emissions per head, for the first time, the Green League scores on the scope and quality of carbon-management plans for the future.

HEFCE to set carbon target with fiscal penalties:    

earth from space.In the Times Higher Education (THE) cover story dated 18 June 2009, they say:  ‘the Climate Change Act 2008 requires greenhouse-gas emissions in the UK to be cut to at least 80 per cent below 1990 levels by 2050.  Five-year carbon budgets set by the Government are due to be unveiled this year. 

A carbon-reduction strategy for universities is being developed by HEFCE, which will set a sector-wide target.  It stated in its 2008 grant letter that capital funds would be linked to performance on green issues. Fiscal penalties for poor performance are expected to come into force by 2011.’
