Action Research

Introduction

Changing the culture of the University will require an approach to programme and project management that is predicated on collective problem solving, reflection on successes and difficulties, a desire and willingness to learn from those successes and difficulties and be prepared to change.

There will be a high level of evaluation of all Ecoversity StuDent activities, both to steer and validate their progress, and to use this as part of a clear action research approach which will be reported at regular time intervals and shared with other HE initiatives.

Action Research Means Learning by Doing

At the moment there appear to be two versions of Ecoversity, the formal version spoken in meetings, proposals, papers and projects and the informal version spoken in corridors, over lunch and on the train.  The formal version is about objectives, structures, processes and aspirations directing Ecoversity.  The informal version is about people’s ‘everyday’ experience of Ecoversity.  Both versions are valid and useful … and need to come together.

Action Research for Ecoversity StuDent is about finding ways in which these two versions can come together to make it easier for ‘learning by doing’ to happen. This means identifying and creating opportunities for communication within and between all sections of the University Community – from cleaners to professors, from students to managers. By doing so a ‘common sense’ version of Ecoversity can develop about how the University of Bradford learns more sustainable ways of doing what a university is supposed to do.

In practical terms this means making it possible for everyone in the University to talk to each other, listen to each other and learn from what each other says and does.

Possible Projects

can be big …

Not so big …

Include everyone …

Or someone …

Collaboration

Action research for Ecoversity relies on your collaboration – and you are all invited to suggest what, who and how this University should become an Ecoversity. So please contact the Ecoversity Office with your ideas, observations, suggestions and criticisms so that we can develop projects that will enable people within the University to reflect, learn, talk about and celebrate becoming an Ecoversity.
