Car Parking Survey - Results and Update.

The University of Bradford’s Ecoversity programme is aiming to make the institution more sustainable in all ways.  One of these is the way people travel to work and study here and the carbon emissions they produce in doing so.  The following is the order of modes of travel which cause the greatest emissions:

  1. Flying
  2. Car driving alone
  3. Bus
  4. Car Share (2 people)
  5. Train
  6. Car Share (3 people)
  7. Walking / Cycling

As lone car driving is the worst of the forms of travel that people will use regularly to get to work or study, the Travel Task group has been working to try and use car parking charges as a way to get people thinking about their travel related carbon emissions and after thinking about them perhaps slowly changing them.  This is very important when we consider that over half of our staff drive alone to the University of Bradford and over a quarter of students.

The two options available in the recent vote were:

Survey Results:

A total of 1036 people voted (715 staff and 321 students), the overall results were as follows:

In 2010 we are going to change the way permits are applied for by implementing a system that fairly allocates permits to those in need.  To do this, decisions need to be made around what factors are considered important for deciding this need.  We, therefore, also asked in the recent vote for people to rank what they considered to be important factors that should be considered in who should get priority access to permits.  The results of this ballot are as follows (highest need first):

  1. Use of Vehicle for Work or Study
  2. Distance to work or study
  3. Dependents / primary carer responsibilities
  4. Child Care considerations
  5. Ease of use of public transport
  6. Out of hours work
  7. Car sharing
  8. Driving an environmentally friendly vehicle
  9. Seniority of post

The factors ranked highest in this list will be used as benchmarks in the future permit application system.
