ALCOHOL
The Government has recently revised the recommended weekly alcohol limits, they are now:

One unit of alcohol is roughly equivalent to half a pint of normal strength beer, or a small glass of wine, or one pub measure of spirits

Whilst it is not recommended that you drink every day, neither is it recommended that you save up your allowance for one night! E.g. you don't drink from Sunday to Friday, and then on Saturday you consume the sum of your recommended daily limit - 21 units. This is known as binge drinking, and is damaging to your liver, stomach, throat, kidneys and heart

Don't feel pressurised to drink
Lots of people choose not to drink and this is perfectly acceptable. If you do feel that your drinking is getting out of hand then don't be afraid to seek help

Road Safety
Every year University students are injured or worse in traffic accidents. Too much alcohol leads to confusion and loss of co-ordination and a hospital bed won't be the best place to spend your first year

Crime
Being on the street under the influence of excess alcohol puts you at greater risk of physical or sexual assault or of having your possessions (including your mobile phone) stolen. Don't drink to the point where you might become a tempting target for criminals

Sex (don't wake up with more than a hangover)
Alcohol relaxes inhibitions and increases the likelihood of risky sexual behaviour. That could lead to unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. Don't drink to the point that your welfare is compromised

University - the morning after!
Poor attendance and a high percentage of the University's disciplinary problems are caused by alcohol. Don't screw up your academic career over one too many beers

Lager and Lard
Half a pint of lager contains about 70 calories, that's the equivalent of eight grams of fat

Spiked drinks
Unfortunately drink spiking is not uncommon in Bradford, and students are targeted as subjects for crime, or sexual assault. See our Date Rape page for more information on keeping yourself safe
