HAY FEVER
Hay Fever is the term given to a hypersensitivity reaction to seasonal allergens, such as grass, tree, and weed pollensPollen

1 in 10 people have Hay Fever, with sufferers experiencing most problems in the Spring and Summer seasons. The common symptoms are sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy nose, throat, and eyes. Severe symptoms can disrupt quality of life, and lead to difficulty with exams, work, sports, and social activities

At yet there is no cure, but there are plenty of medicines that can help reduce the symptoms:

  • Antihistamine tablets reduce the effect of the allergens. There are different ingredients in different brands, so if you find the tablet is not effective, look for a brand containing a different ingredient that may prove to be more effective for you

  • Nasal sprays reduce nasal congestion (but can take about a week to work)

  • You can help yourself by practising allergen avoidance, for example, when driving keep car windows closed, when walking on high pollen days wear sunglasses

  • Try to take preventive medication early in the day before you are exposed to the allergens

You can obtain advice about suitable medicines from your Pharmacist, or consult one of our doctors or nurses
