NEW ELECTRONIC MODULE CATALOGUE INTRODUCED

Janet Holland and Amanda Huggon. The University has introduced a new system of direct data entry to the module catalogue for new and amended modules. The new system, known as Mod Cat, is the result of a joint initiative between Academic Standards and Support Unit (ASSU) and Management Information Services (MIS).

The aim is to provide an efficient entry and approval process for all staff involved in the maintenance of module and course information.

Academic Standards Administrator, Amanda Huggon, said: "The system has lots of advantages, it is paperless, efficient and flexible. So far we have had no complaints from those who have been using it."

The system was used on a trial basis in the School of Engineering before being used across the University.

Janet Holland from Civil Engineering who took part in the initial trial said: "I've been using Mod Cat for quite a while now. It has made my life much easier as you have instant access to module descriptors and can rely on them being the most recent ones available.

"If and when I have had queries Amanda is on the other end of the phone with a solution no matter how idiotic the query might be! When we had been using the system for a while Amanda e-mailed us asking for suggestions on how to improve things which was great as when you have been using a new system for a while you always get ideas for slight improvements - if at all possible improvements were made."

For more information on access and training on Mod Cat please contact Amanda Huggon in ASSU on 3027.
