RESEARCH OFFICE HIGHLIGHTS NEW OPPORTUNITIES

The Research Office has launched a new initiative drive to highlight funding opportunities and assist staff in the bidding for grants.

Amongst the range of new initiatives, the office, which is situated in the Graduate School, Richmond Building, has produced an informative web-based system to replace its paper 'Research Newsletter'.

The new website provides:

  • Targeted information, classified according to the School (updated weekly)
  • A comprehensive calendar of research funding deadlines (updated daily)
  • Direct links to application forms and funding web pages
  • A range of easy-to-access information on travel grants, EU opportunities and grants for new staff.

The Research Office staff.By contacting the Office, staff can also access a targeted search facility - Community of Science (COS) - which provides a range of funding ideas, many of which are outside the mainstream of funding sources.

In addition, the Office is holding a series of information seminars, to help staff optimise their chances of success in bidding for research funding. Workshops will range from 'Grantsmanship', which includes tips from experienced and successful research applicants, to seminars featuring speakers from the Research Councils, the European Union and major charities, such as the Wellcome Trust. Staff are requested to book early. Dates are provided on the website and on the ub-research email.

Director of the Research Office, Neil Johnson, said: "These events offer an interesting and lively way to improve the vital skills of successful research funding bids, and to meet colleagues in related research areas.

"With a one in two success rate in bids to the EU research programmes in the last year, the University enjoyed a successful year in European research activities."

The University's liaison officer from the UK Research Council's Brussels office will also be visiting Bradford in February 2002 to deliver a seminar and visit research groups with specific queries.

For further information on any of the above facilities and activities, log on to the Research website at www.bradford.ac.uk/admin/rsil/ or contact Jean Martin on (23)3170 or email j.e.martin@bradford.ac.uk

  • The Research Office has a new member of staff, Sean Kelly, who has been appointed Research Officer. Sean will assist on Research Council and charity funding to increase the University's research income. Any queries regarding research funding can be directed to Sean on (23)5232 or at s.m.kelly1@bradford.ac.uk
