COURSE FOR CLINICAL PRACTITIONERS

The University's School of Health Studies has organised a three-day course for clinical practitioners working with people with learning disabilities who experience mental health disorders.

The course will explore and further develop knowledge and skills previously gained in the work place. Dr Raghu Raghavan, of the School of Health Studies, said: "This course is for health and social care professionals in the field of learning disability or who provide therapeutic services for people with learning disabilities."

The areas covered in the course will be:

  • Mental health and learning disability: nature, incidence and prevalence, overlapping with challenging behaviour.
  • Specific mental health disorders: anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, personality disorders, dementia, Autism and Aspbergers syndrome. n Assessment of mental health disorders: screening instruments, diagnostic interviews.
  • Needs assessment: assessment of clinical and social needs.
  • Therapeutic interventions: cognitive and behaviour therapeutic interventions.
  • Developing effective services: generic, specialist and integrated service models.

The keynote speakers will include Dr Raghu Raghavan and Dr Pradip Patel. The course will run from May 15-17 at Heaton Mount and costs £380. Contact Joanne Moore on (23)3213/6.
