Education chiefs back Bradford's Bid

Heads of both the University and Bradford College have pledged their support for Bradford's bid to be Capital of Culture in 2008.

Bradford 2008 logo.Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chris Taylor, who sits on the Capital of Culture board, said: "A successful bid will take the region forward into a new era of renewal and regeneration and will not only be a boost for the Bradford district - there will be knock-on effects across the region.

"Capital of Culture status will bring inward investment to Yorkshire through economic grants which will stimulate interest from developers. This is a bid to which everyone can contribute and from which everyone can benefit."

And Bradford College Principal, Alan Hodgson, said: "It seems to me that a City of Culture is one in which people can feel comfortable and proud of their environment, its rich history and future promise.

"A cultured city is one at ease with itself and confidant about the future. It is stimulating and exciting, challenging and thought provoking. All of these words also describe what education and learning aspire to promote." B

radford's bid was submitted to the Department of Culture, Media and Sport on March 26. Cities will find out if they have been shortlisted in September 2002. For further information logon to www.bradford2008.com
