Staff from the University's Bradford Dementia Group and other guests at the launch of the new course.

Dementia affects approximately 600,000 people in the UK and has been movingly depicted by Dame Judi Dench in the blockbuster film 'Iris'.

Professor Murna Downs, who leads the Bradford Dementia Group, said: "We have a moral obligation to share our knowledge of what can be done to support and sustain people with dementia and their families. Our course emphasises that many things can be done to improve quality of life if you promote a positive, pro-active, person- and family-centred approach to caring."

The launch was attended by representatives from health and social services, and primary care trusts from across the region.

The University's School of Health Studies new BSc course is available through distance learning allowing flexibility for those people working in the fields of health and social services. More than 30 students have so far been accepted onto the course.
