'Race Ahead' Travel Conference to break down ethnic barriers

Tourism organisations and local travel businesses were invited to attend a one-day conference at the School of Management this month where the findings of a large tourism research project were aired.

The research findings have revealed a regional travel industry that is divided along ethnic lines.

The event, entitled 'Race Ahead: Opportunities for the Travel Trade', allowed all sectors of the industry to come together to learn more about the potential of marketing to ethnic communities.

The 18-month research project has been jointly funded by the European Social Fund for the Yorkshire and Humber region and the University. A prime objective of the research has been to investigate employment and training opportunities for people from ethnic and mixed race communities within the travel trade and to promote cultural awareness in this sector.

Project Director, Mary Klemm, said the research team's recommendations would help tourism businesses to develop new markets for holidays and travel among ethnic minorities in the region.

She said: "There is a great potential market there. The population of young people from ethnic minorities is growing rapidly and many second and third generation ethnic minorities are upwardly mobile, with a high standard of education and a rising disposable income."
