Industrial Trip for FE2HE
pupils
Students
on this year's FE2HE summer school took part in an industrial visit to
Interface Fabrics at Mirfield.
The scheme was hailed
a great success when around 50 students came from all over the region
to live in the University's Halls of Residence for a week. Following the
summer school, participants Alexandr Manakov and Gareth Richardson, both
of Hartlepool Sixth-form College, said they had learnt a lot from the
experience as well as enjoying their time spent at the University.
Alexandr said: "Before
attending the FE2HE Summer School I did not know much about University
life and what range of courses were available. I did not have any ideas
about attending University. This course gave me an idea about the engineering
courses available and gave me a taste of what University life is really
like."
Gareth said: "Attending
the FE2HE course helped me to choose the right profession and University
course. It made me feel like a real engineering student for the duration.
I found the lectures I attended very useful and informative. I felt that
a full course of these lectures would be life-altering."
The scheme is aimed
at students in Year-12 at further education and sixth form colleges in
the UK. It gave students the opportunity to become involved in an extensive
programme of events and activities such as designing and building swimming
robots, developing their creative and critical thinking skills and attending
lectures and seminars.
During the summer
school the Head of Science, Technology and Medicine at Imperial College,
London, Professor David Phillips OBE, visited the University to give a
talk about the healing powers of light. Professor Philips has been awarded
an OBE for his skills in communicating science to young people.
