International Students welcomed
to Bradford
New
international students from the University of Bradford and Bradford College
were recently welcomed to the area by the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor
Richard Wightman.
A civic reception,
held at City Hall, gave students from across the world a chance to meet
the Lord Mayor and local Councillors, as well as staff and current students
from the University and Bradford College.
International
students Daniel Dahlgreh, from Sweden, and Hilda Amaya, from California,
with Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Richard Wightman
The Lord Mayor gave
a speech to the new students in which he welcomed them to the city and
spoke of the many exciting changes happening in the area. The day finished
with afternoon tea and a guided tour of the City Hall.
Hilda Amaya, from
California, who is studying at the School of Management, said: "It was
a pleasant surprise to see so many international students at the University.
I already have friends from Spain, Holland, Lebanon and Germany. The International
Visiting Students Programme is well organised and everyone is very helpful.
I am delighted to be in Bradford and my parents are very proud."
Robert Lawton, from
Australia, is studying for an MA in Peace Studies. He said: "I've been
impressed with the way people have gone out of their way to make me feel
welcome here. I have not felt out of place. Instead people seem genuinely
interested in helping. The city is easy to get around and there's plenty
to do. When you travel across the world it makes a huge difference to
see a friendly face in the shops and on the buses. I'm looking forward
to my year here very much."
There are over 90
different nationalities of students represented on campus at the University
and both overseas undergraduate and postgraduate recruitment continues
to grow.
