Managing Religious Diversity
A seminar hosted
by the University to discuss how higher education can best manage religious
diversity has attracted interest from staff, equality practitioners and
faith advisers from the HE sector.
The event was supported
by the Higher Education Equal Opportunities Network and explored some
of the key issues and challenges of valuing religious diversity on the
campus and in the wider community.
Equality & Diversity
Adviser Naseem Zaman said: "Bradford is an institution which is proud
of its cultural mix and welcomes students from all over the world. This
seminar therefore involved some important discussions and insights to
ensure that religious diversity is acknowledged as a valuable element
of equality and diversity to support staff and students."
The seminar included
presentations by Sophie Gilliat-Ray, who spoke on 'Higher Education and
Student Religious Identity', and Sally Pelham, who gave an insight into
the implications of religious diversity in Higher Education and forthcoming
legal implications.
Staff who took part
in the event were given the opportunity to discuss and share their ideas.
Topics covered included the implications of acknowledging religious diversity
for the curriculum, sources of mutual support in addressing religious
diversity and how it may be accommodated institutionally.
