University and BBC celebrate
Saltaire
Staff
from the University's Pennine and Yorkshire Studies Unit have been collaborating
with BBC Radio 4 to make a programme about Saltaire.
The programme - part
of BBC Radio 4's series 'Mapping the Town' - was broadcast last month.
Saltaire is renowned as the mid-Victorian industrial village almost unchanged
since it was built by Sir Titus Salt as the site of his worsted mill.
United
Reformed Church, Saltaire
Listeners to 'Mapping
the Town' learnt how Saltaire originated, how it was built, and Sir Titus
Salt's motives for building the famous village. The programme also discussed
the successful regeneration of Saltaire through its industrial heritage.
Co-ordinator of the
University's Pennine and Yorkshire Studies Unit based in the School of
Lifelong Education and Development, Paul Jennings, said: "Saltaire is
now a World Heritage Site and one of the Bradford Metropolitan District's
hottest tourist properties along with the Bront' Parsonage. "We were pleased
to be able to help and to bring our expertise on the area to a wider audience."
