University
links with China
The Schools of Engineering,
Design and Technology, and Informatics are hoping to develop profitable
new links with industry in China.
Mobile communications
company Eastcom visited the University last September to explore the possibility
of establishing joint research and development electronics projects.
Postgraduate
students Song Guo, Xing Liang and Hong Che gave presentations based on
their MSc projects during a visit by Mobile Communications company Eastcom.
Eastcom is a $1bn
company with 2,200 employees, 20% of whom are in research and development
and it is leading the push to launch 3G in China. The visit was part of
the first Chinese trade visit from Zhejiang to the Yorkshire region, hosted
by Yorkshire Forward. Eastcom are part of a six-company delegation of
leading Chinese companies from Hangshou who wish to develop links with
organisations in the Yorkshire region.
During the visit,
various presentations were given to the Vice-President of Eastcom, Mr
Xudong Yu. Professor Ray Sheriff, of the School of Engineering, Design
and Technology, presented the MSc course in Personal, Mobile and Satellite
Communications (PMSC). Dr Fun Hu, of the Department of Cybernetics in
the School of Informatics, presented the EU-funded FP6 IST project WirelessCabin,
(see New & Views, Nov 2002), highlighting inflight entertainment provision
through different mobile and wireless access technologies. In addition,
PMSC postgraduate students Song Guo, Xing Liang and Hong Che gave presentations
on their MSc projects.
Bill Boffin, Network
Director of the University's Informatics Industrial Unit, said the visit
was a valuable opportunity to showcase the strengths of the University's
research as well as helping to attract students onto courses within the
two Schools.
He said: "The University
already has close links with a number of Chinese universities and this
visit broadened those relationships. This was a superb opportunity for
us to attract funding and research contracts, and if we could attract
two or three postgraduates a year that would be great.
"We believe that,
as a result of this visit, we will also increase the number of students
we have on our courses in Engineering and Mobile Communications as well
as increase research into mobile phone technology."
