Prospective
undergraduates and their parents are being given the chance to test their
investigative and forensic skills at open days held by the Department
of Chemical and Forensic Sciences.

Duffy from St Robert of Newminster School, Washington, Tyne & Wear.
Director of Forensic
Sciences, Dr Steven Dobrowski is running a series of open days for UCAS
applicants who have applied for courses starting in September 2003.
In one of the events,
candidates were asked to solve a short murder mystery in which a woman
walking her dog discovered the body of a local priest. The candidates
examined evidence such as footwear marks, fingerprints, handwriting and
blood spattering from an imaginary crime scene.
Steven has developed
his inspirational idea for open days from a previous event funded by the
Gifted and Talented Scheme. Two hundred and fifty local school students
were invited to work in teams in the Department in a race to be the first
to solve a fictional murder mystery.
Open days also give
applicants and their parents an opportunity to see campus facilities and
meet staff and current undergraduate students of the Department.
