Students
step out on their own
The University has
provided assistance to two students from the School of Informatics to
start up their own company.
Andy Barratt, of
Computing, and Shaun Wilders, of Cybernetics, have formed Barratt and
Wilders IT Solutions Ltd, a company providing IT services tailored to
the specific needs of the voluntary and small business sector.
(Left

Bill Boffin congratulates students Andy Barratt and Shaun Wilders for
their successful application to the University's 3rd Mission Development
Fund, which has helped them to set up their new company Barratt and Wilders
Ltd.
The idea for their
venture was identified whilst Andy and Shaun were on an industrial placement
with a local company and, with support from the University and their placement
company, they worked to develop a business plan.
Staff in the School
of Informatics were impressed by the business case they presented and
decided to make an application to the University's 3rd Mission Development
Fund, a fund designed to provide pump priming for 3rd Mission ideas.
The application was
successful, securing a £10,000 loan to assist with the setting up of the
business.
Andy said: "The University's
advice has been a great help to us in setting up our company. We now have
the opportunity to apply the skills gained on industrial placement and
our degree programmes. Hopefully this will guarantee our employment for
the future."
