New Media Technology under
the microscope
New
media technology is to be placed under the microscope after colleagues
from the School of Informatics secured funding for an innovative project
in intelligent publishing.
The project is entitled
TRIP (Transdisciplinary Research into Intelligent Publishing) and has
been funded by the Economic and Social Research Council.
It has been designed
to encourage debate and collaboration across diverse disciplines, including
publishing, artificial intelligence, and information design. Over the
next two years a series of high-profile meetings, seminars and workshops
will allow researchers, design practitioners and industry professionals
to come together to address content design in the media and publishing
industries.
Lecturer in Creative
Technology, Patrick Allen said: "One burning issue lately has been the
generation of content from one source into a number of alternative devices.
Many national daily newspapers, for example, now deliver identical content
that is intended for display on a wide range of different devices with
display properties that can vary dramatically, from print to web, WAP
and mobiles.
"Our abilities to
analyse, understand and make judgements about the design of content in
the new media tends to lag behind the technological advances made in the
field of content delivery. This is especially the case with the automotive
generation of media content and we currently know very little about what
the most appropriate and effective ways to design and structure information
are."
The next TRIP event
will take place on Wednesday, April 16 and Thursday, April 17 at the Yorkshire
Sculpture Park. The emphasis will be on the Design and Creation of multimodal
and multimedia content in the new media.
The event will be
of interest to design professionals, information providers in the cultural
sector, academic researchers in computing and communications and those
working in the publishing and media industries.
