Professor
Awarded OBE
Congratulations have
been paid to Geoff Layer, Professor of Lifelong Learning and Dean of the
School of Lifelong Education and Development, who has received an OBE
for his services to Higher Education.
Following the announcement
of the New Year Honours, Geoff said: "This demonstrates the progress that
the University of Bradford has made. It is a significant player in widening
participation and has some of the highest combinations of young people
from lower socio-economic groups."
Geoff is also Director
of Action on Access which is the HEFCE/LSC Widening Participation Co-ordination
Team. In Bradford, he is responsible for leading the School in the development
and implementation of its roles. Geoff is actively involved in a number
of Bradford and West Yorkshire initiatives.
He is a non-Executive
Director of Careers Bradford, a Trustee of West and North Yorkshire Open
College Network, a member of Bradford's Learning Partnership and the Bradford
Strategic Co-ordinating Group for 14 to 19 education and training. He
is also Director of the HEFCE Innovations Co-ordination Team and has recently
been appointed as a non-executive Director of the Higher Education and
Research Opportunities (HERO) in the United Kingdom.
Before joining the
University in 1999 Geoff was Professor of Lifelong Learning and Head of
Access and Guidance at Sheffield Hallam University where he had worked
as a lecturer since 1983.
He was educated in
the North East of England and in Soham, Cambridgeshire.
