A Matter of Life or Death
Have you ever wondered
what it takes to make a clone or how scientists can catch a killer from
just one piece of hair?
A series of public
lectures, 'Science - a matter of life or death!', may provide some
of the answers with staff, students and members of the public invited
to attend.
The free lectures,
highlighting the ways in which scientific discoveries can affect our everyday
lives, are being run by the University's School of Life Sciences as part
of National Science Week. There will be one lecture each day from Monday,
March 10 to Friday, March 14, 2003.
The topics will range
from DNA manipulation to forensic 'detective' work. Lectures cover topics
as diverse as assessment of cataracts, prescribing errors and bald man-eating
lions, and reflect the research and professional interests of the staff
within the School of Life Sciences.
Also as a part of
National Science Week, on Wednesday, March 12, year-12 pupils are invited
to attend a 'Life Sciences Focus Day'.
The day will provide
an opportunity for a hands-on experience, through workshops and meeting
current students, in a range of life science areas including biomedical
sciences, chemistry, forensic science, optometry and pharmacy. The day
is designed to demonstrate that studying sciences can lead to numerous
interesting and stimulating careers.
The Focus Day is being
delivered in partnership with Excellence Challenge.
Students must pre-book
for this event. The event will run from 9.30am until 4pm. Please contact
Linda Whitehead on 01274 (23)6293 or email L.M.Whitehead1@bradford.ac.uk
