Chancellor's
Award for Distinguished Teaching
Dr Liz Kelly, Senior
Lecturer in the School of Pharmacy, has received the Chancellor's Award
for Distinguished Teaching. Liz is delighted to have been nominated by
her students for the award.
Dr
Liz Kelly with Vice-Chancellor Professor Chris Taylor.
She said: "My basic
philosophy for learning is that it should be fun and I believe that this
can only be achieved if the quality of the learning environment is high
and the activity is both challenging and relevant. I am also concerned
that teaching sessions should be well organised and that teaching aids
are of good quality. In large lecture theatres I try to make the session
as interactive and interesting as possible to encourage active learning
by the students."
Dr Kelly's approach
to teaching is to use different modes of delivery such as practical classes,
data handling workshops, Computer-Assisted Learning programs, student
presentations (poster and oral), project supervision, tutorial and case
study sessions.
She said: "I believe
that a mixture of several types of session gives students the opportunity
to develop a range of skills and promotes understanding of the theory.
I have continually tried to develop coursework that provides students
with the opportunity to develop and enhance a range of skills.
"I hope that I provide
students with appropriate stimulus material and enthusiasm for the subject.
The greatest compliment a student could pay me would be to want to know
more," she added.
