Marie Curie Daffodil Campaign
A
Clinical Sciences student has been helping to raise funds for the Marie
Curie Daffodil Campaign through the University's UCAN Project.
A fundraising team, organised
by undergraduate Mohammad Ehsan Akhtar, raised almost £200 by collecting
contributions from University staff and students in the Richmond Foyer
Mohammad currently volunteers on a weekly basis at the Marie Curie Hospice
and, by arranging the event, has helped to increase awareness of the Hospice
and the work of Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Marie Curie Cancer Care is
a charity dedicated to the care of people affected by cancer and the enhancement
of their quality of life, through its caring services, cancer research
and education. Nearly 300,000 people in the UK develop cancer every year.
The Marie Curie Hospice, based
on Leeds Road in Bradford, actively seeks to promote quality of life for
cancer patients and to provide support to their carers. High-quality nursing
staff provide one-to-one care for the patient and practical and emotional
support for families.
Mohammad said: "I wanted to
inform students about the Marie Curie Cancer Care hospice. I felt I could
do more as a volunteer to help to encourage colleagues to play an active
role in the health care community and to make them aware of the opportunities
available to help in the local community in a voluntary capacity.
"It would be an achievement
if this fundraising event was conducted annually at the University. We
were praised for our efforts by staff and students alike."
Brenda Doyle, Community Fundraising
Manager at Marie Curie, expressed thanks to staff and students for their
generous donation. "We appreciate their kindness in thinking of us in
this way. Their generosity will help us to continue our work in helping
people with cancer and their families," she said.
Thirteen students from the
University currently volunteer at the Marie Curie Hospice via the University
of Bradford's UCAN project.
