The Quiet Life
A team from the University's Civil and Environmental Engineering Department
have developed a revolutionary soundproofing material which could help
save our ears from life's din.

The material, produced by Professor David Hothersall, Dr Mark Swift and
Dr Kirill Horoshenkov, could eventually change the way everything from
our cars, washing machines and even our homes are built.

Professor Hothersall said: "The material we have been working with is
a foam used to fill the middle of car dashboards and bumpers retrieved
from old cars. The existing bubbles in the foam, as well as the air pockets
created in binding, are an effective way of absorbing sound waves."
The discovery has been patented and developed by the specially formed
spin-off company Acoutechs.
