Parents
into University Certificates
Parents have been awarded certificates
of attendance after attending the University to study key skills.
Project Manager Anne Weston
said: "Completing the course at a university was a tremendous achievement
for the students, and some surprised themselves by submitting work for
a level 1 module in ICT. The students wouldn't have been able to brush
up on their skills and study a level 1 module without the support of the
project."
As part of its commitment to
widening participation, the School of Lifelong Education and Development
(SLED) was successful in its bid to the European Social Fund (ESF) to
run the project, entitled 'Parents into University'.
It was aimed specifically
at parents who were unsure of their own abilities but would like to help
their children do better at school. The course offered parents of South
Asian origin living in the inner city the opportunity to improve their
skills and confidence while supporting their children's education.
The course enabled parents
to study skills in English, Maths and ICT. The funding provided financial
support in terms of childcare and travel expenses, whilst also providing
a high level of individual learning in small groups.
