Pharmacy in the 21st Century
The
University is stepping into the future with a new and innovative Pharmacy
degree course to prepare students for the changing demands of pharmacists
in 2008 and beyond.
Head of the School of Pharmacy
Professor Brenda Costall said: "Demand for pharmacists has never been
higher but pharmacy in the 21st century is going to be very different
to the way it has been conducted in the past. Pharmacists of the future
will have greater responsibility for the management of medicines in patients
and will work much more closely with doctors and other healthcare professionals
in primary care.

"The new course will educate
and train pharmacists to a greater extent in the clinical sciences and
therapeutics so they can take on new and exciting roles such as pharmacist
prescribing. The Government would like to see pharmacists using their
extensive knowledge of medicines to a greater extent in primary care by
helping to relieve some of the pressures that doctors are under. "
Managers in Pharmacy have sought
feedback from stakeholders so that the course meets the needs of future
pharmacists. Following their comments, the new course will take a multidisciplinary
approach with integration of many modules.
