First-Class Semester for UBU
The past semester saw three
major campaigns by the Students' Union.
Firstly, the successful 'Bras
on Bars', in aid of Breast Cancer, raised around £400 for Cancer Research
UK.
Meanwhile, the Students' Union
'Wall of Debt' banner received 900 signatures in support of free education,
which was later paraded through London with 100 university students as
part of the NUS National Demonstration to end student debt.
Surrounding the publication
of the funding White Paper, UBU Officers have met with local MPs and local
researchers to continue the campaign.
Finally, Personal Safety Week,
organised by Women's Officer Kate Greenfield, raised awareness of different
aspects of personal safety including drink spiking and safety in Halls.
The week culminated in the launch of Securitxt - the joint venture between
the University and the UBU, allowing students and staff to text details
of any incidents to Security.
UBU Communications Officer
Susannah Davies said: "It's been a great start to the academic year and
we hope that this semester goes as well as the first."
Upcoming campaigns include
'UBU - UB Proud', challenging stereotypes and promoting positive body
image, the annual RAG event, and the 'Jailbreak' fundraising challenge.
