New Floor Spings into Action

The opening.Vice-Chancellor Professor Chris Taylor was recently invited to cut the official ribbon at the opening of the Sports Centre's new sprung floor.

The original Granwood floor was laid in 1973 when the Sports Centre was built. Since then, the floor has had a number of sandings, re-linings and re-sealings, and had become too thin to take another refurbishment.

The new floor, also from the Granwood company, called 'Gransprung', uses the same floor tiles as the original, but mounts them on high-quality blockboard in turn mounted on rubber buffers to give the feel and performance of a fully sprung floor.

New lines are in place for badminton, tennis, basketball, volleyball, indoor hockey, 5-a-side football, netball and Futsal.

Director of Physical Recreation Steve Teasdale said: "Even though the original floor was superb value for money it was like concrete and the bane of sports people's hips, knees and ankles. The finished article is superb."
