Student Success Projects
Academic
Schools recently submitted proposals for projects to aid student retention
as part of the University's widening participation strategy.
The £168,000 is being made
available to the Schools over two years, with the initiative being co-ordinated
by the School of Lifelong Education and Development (SLED). It will enable
Schools to offer learning support to students, whilst recognising students'
diverse needs.
Physiotherapist
Kate Ellis supervises student physio Yvonne Nicholson with patient Loreece
Cunningham as part of Pysiotherapy's clinical placement at St James' Hospital
in Leeds.
Success projects include:
Social Sciences and Humanities
employing two doctoral students to provide ongoing academic and study
skills to 20 first-year students, including regular group workshops and
individual support.
Peace Studies appointing
a Student Support Assistant to work with students.
Languages and European Studies
offering student support scheme for new entrants in grammatical skills.
A Learning Support Officer
at the School of Management partly funded by the student success project,
to implement dedicated support sessions on issues such as group work,
presentations and essay writing.
Archaeological Sciences,
who are using the funding towards providing academic and study skills
for first-year students through the development of a computer-based
package to support teaching of numerical and statistical methods and
through the provision of group workshops and individual support sessions
for statistics and numeracy skills.
An academic bridging unit
in Physiotherapy to offer study skill sessions to year-one students
and a clinical bridging unit to prepare year-two students for their
first clinical placements. Staff from SLED and the Student Career Development
Services have been providing the academic skills sessions.
A series of workshops in
Informatics entitled 'Writing for Professional Purposes' to help students
develop their writing skills.
Bradford Centre for International
Development who have appointed a tutor to work with targeted students
on statistical skills.
