ERIC RETIRES AFTER 31 YEARS

Eric Smith hangs up his hat.Capital Works Manager Eric Smith has retired after more than 30 years' service at the University.

Colleagues threw a leaving party for Eric, who worked in the Estates and Facilities Department. Eric, 66, started at the University in 1969 as an Architectural Assistant.

Ten years later he was promoted to Section Leader and then Building Surveyor. In 1992, he was made Manager.

Eric said: "I have seen so many changes over the years but I will miss people I see on a day-to-day basis.

"When I first started here, it was like a family firm where everyone knew each other. There are people I am leaving behind who have been here longer than I have, and it is difficult, to some extent, to leave. But I still play badminton at the University and I shall be coming back to play."
