Welcome
The University has
witnessed some exciting developments over the last few weeks and these
are featured in the November edition of News
and Views.
First, the University
saw a well-earned turnaround in recruitment
at the beginning of the year, with the number of undergraduate admissions
increasing by 16% from 2001.
In addition, the
decision by the two governing bodies of the University of Bradford and
Bradford College to move towards full merger by August 2004 is covered
in a special supplement 'Looking further and higher'.
The University's commitment
to widening participation is highlighted in several other articles this
month. A House of Lords reception, 'Seeking
to Shape a Democratic, Civilised and Inclusive Society', attracted participants
from all areas of widening participation with a keynote speech by Margaret
Hodge.

Meanwhile, local school
pupils recently had the chance to live the life of a forensic
scientist for a day as part of a series of workshops. Undergraduate
and postgraduate students from the University went back
to school as part of a new ground-breaking initiative under the National
Mentoring Pilot Project. Year-10 students from Barnsley took part in a
special campus trail aimed at increasing awareness
of higher education.
Finally, staff attended
workshops to hear about a new Compact scheme
aimed at co-ordinating the way local youngsters are introduced to higher
education.
