University introduces new
Compact Scheme
Staff
from across the university have attended workshops to hear about a new
scheme aimed at co-ordinating the way local youngsters are introduced
to higher education.
Bradford hopes to
follow the success of similar schemes in other universities with the Compact
scheme, which aims to raise aspirations and boost entry into Higher Education
by bringing together activities offered to local and regional schools
from university departments and schools.
Activities that have
previously been run by SLED include Campus Trails
, Summer Schools, Revision Classes, UCAS Mini-Conventions, Focus Days
and Mentoring. The objective of these will be
both to enhance academic achievement and build capacity among school pupils.
Successful completion of the scheme will earn students points that they
can then use towards their entry into University.
Vice-Chancellor of
the University, Professor Chris Taylor said: "We are committed to seeking
ways of raising aspirations and progression into higher education and
believe that if students have the opportunity to sample university they
are more likely to want to go on to study. We recognise the issues within
the area and believe that the University has an important part to play
in raising educational attainment in the District. We think this new scheme
will help to achieve that".
