ROYAL NAVY BROUGHT IN TO ASSIST IN INTERNATIONAL RESCUE PROJECT

Headstart delegates. The School of Engineering summoned assistance from the Royal Navy to help run the International Rescue project during the Headstart Residential Course in July. Headstart is run in conjunction with the Royal Academy of Engineering at universities across the country. Some of the brightest Year 12 students in the country compete for places and thirty-two students were selected to participate in the programme at Bradford. The aim of the scheme is to encourage more bright young people to consider engineering as a career option.

Throughout the course the youngsters were made aware of the excellent career opportunities in Engineering. They had the chance to pick the brains of staff from across the School of Engineering in a Question & Answer style panel and spent a whole day on the International Rescue project, which presented them with a series of hands-on problems to solve, including elements of civil, electronic and mechanical engineering.

They took part in a variety of team-building and problem solving exercises, and listened to entertaining lectures from Professor McColm and Steve Garrity. The students also visited the Filtronics plant, at Saltaire, and were taken on a full tour of the campus and had the chance to use the sports facilities, including the swimming pool.

The course was rounded off at Heaton Mount with a formal dinner, and after dinner speakers including Dr. Alan McCurrie, Professor Andrew Day and Mr. Jack Bradley.
