SHARING KNOWLEDGE FOR COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE

A new venture, aimed at bringing West Yorkshire small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) together to share best practice knowledge based on total quality management principles, is due to be launched this month.

The SME Knowledge Network is managed by David Williamson who has joined the European Centre for Total Quality Management (ECTQM) on secondment from the new Learning and Skills Council (LSC) for West Yorkshire.

David said: "On a sub-regional level there is an increasing need to provide SMEs with access to a higher level of knowledge in Best Practice Management. At the School of Management and the ECTQM, West Yorkshire businesses have a world-class resource on their doorstep.

"Recent research from the LSC West Yorkshire revealed that 99.3 per cent of all businesses in West Yorkshire are SMEs. They are the job and wealth creators of the future, so it is vital they have access to a higher level knowledge which will assist them in creating competitive advantage and sustainable growth."

The Network will be offering four free forums over 2001/2002. These will be: Leadership within SMEs on October 30; Customer focus for SMEs on December 4; Change management in SMEs on March 5; and Benchmarking and its relevance to SMEs on 28 May.

All events will take place from 4.30m to 7pm followed by a buffet at Heaton Mount Conference Centre.
