TEAM WORKING TAKES FIRST PLACE

Neil Johnson and Jeremy Cooper.Civil and Structural Engineering student, Jeremy Cooper, recently won first prize of £200 in the local final of the Shell Technology Enterprise Programme (STEP), which aims to help small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) develop their business through student work placements.

Jeremy receives his prize from the Director of the Research Office, Neil Johnson.

Jeremy successfully completed an eight week placement to investigate team working and pay structures at Cold Drawn Products Ltd. (CDP), an engineering firm based in Scholes, near Bradford. He had to review current working practices and provide recommendations of what improvements could be undertaken to make the business more efficient.

Steve Booth of CDP said, "The project was very challenging. It was a real issue for us and Jeremy has contributed to developing a workable way forward."

Jeremy said: "I found the placement very instructive and it has helped me make decisions about my future career path."

A total of twelve students undertook STEP work placements at local SMEs in the Bradford area this summer. Their projects included: the redesign and improvement of web pages; development of new manufacturing processes; and development of quality procedures. All the projects enabled the students to develop invaluable personal and technical skills.
