New
Space for Innovation
A new unit to promote the
University's work in cutting edge technologies such as cybernetics and
animatronics was launched recently.
The Informatics Innovation
Unit (IIU) will work with a range of industries from film and animation
companies to computer and electronics businesses.

Yorkshire Forward Chief Executive
Martin Havenhand delivered the keynote speech at the launch alongside
Vice-Chancellor of the University Professor Chris Taylor.

Invited industry guests also
had the chance to see the new facilities at the centre in the University's
Horton Building.
These include the new SIMULA
Motion Capture suite that gives the region's games and films companies
access to the most advanced motion capture technology available anywhere
in the UK.
Guests also heard about the
new degree course in animatronics where students learn how to create the
kind of motorised puppets used in movies and theme parks.
Dean of the School of Informatics
Professor Rae Earnshaw said: "This new unit is another demonstration of
how the University is leading the way in these exciting and cutting edge
technologies."
Director of Innovation and
Enterprise at the School of Informatics Bill Boffin addressed how the
region's expertise can be shared nationally and internationally.
At the beginning of this month,
Mr Boffin took on a new role with regional development agency Yorkshire
Forward to liaise between all universities and industry leaders in Yorkshire
and the Humber.
